e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Cost to charge LiPo.

Just read a article and the guy was talking about the high cost of Nitro now and the cost of lipo packs seem to be falling.
He then goes on to say that the cost to charge his lipo`s will "not even show on my quarterly electric bill".
I have often wondered this myself, along with things like my PC running cost.
Does anyone know the amount of power it takes per hour to charge a lipo OR however it would be measured.

The simplest way to tell is to use a 'kill-a-watt' type device to plug your DC power supply into while charging your battery.

Last I recall, my buddy at the airfield used one of these with his Honda mini power inversion gas generator (2000 watt) and it barely got off idle speed.
In simple math terms - charging a 6S pack (24volt) at 10 amps (240 watts) will consume 48 watts at 120 volts. If my math is correct.
That equates to a 48 watt-hour, if charging at the same rate for the full hour.

End the end.. you won't notice the power consumption to charge lipos on your electric bill.
Our energy rates here are as follows:
3.55¢ per kWh, first 500 kWh
7.82¢ per kWh, over 500 kWh

So that equates to $0.0782 to consume 1000 watts at 120 volts for 1hr. (or 16 - 60watt lightbulbs)

Those calculations are great.I am hopeless at things like that.
So to charge lipo`s IS very cheap, that surprised me!

I've used one of these devices to see just how much electricity I use, typically charging a mix of 6s 3700, 6s 2500 and 3s 2500 packs. Usage is anywhere from .20Kwh to appropoaching 1Kwh depending on how many packs I charge. At a cost of say 10-20 pence per KWh, its costing me about 10 pence per charging session on average. Its not much!

I might have some insight on that. I have a Kill-A-Watt I use for my work and I have tested many of our computers with it. Most idle anywhere between 100W and 250W for just the pc itself but let me get you some real numbers ...

Ok I just hooked it up to my current desktop pc (Core2Duo E7200, 2GB ram and 2 hard drives) with 24" LCD and it is idling at 145W. Without the Monitor plugged in it is 114W. Hope that helps.

Here is a link a the meter I have

it may cost me 15 cents to charge all my batteries at home, but at the field it is 100% free(car battery+ 2 high power solar panels)....

I've recently been playing with a Kill A Watt meter that was given to me. My average cost per kiloWatt-hour is $.062. I charged 1S 10Ah and 3S 2.2 Ah cells all day and used less than 1/2 a KWH. That is less than three cents spent. The electricity used when charging is hella cheap.
