The very accomplished 3d pilots running their nitro helis at maximum head speeds go through engines more often than they like to admit.
This is one of the advantages of electrics. In the past I've put over 700 flights on a high quality name brand electric motor in my Logo 600 running @ 2250 head speed. The new bearings and shaft for the motor cost about $22.00, and it was running strong again. And, during the entire 700+ flights, I never had to adjust a needle valve, or change a glow plug, and suffered no in-flight motor failures.
The really hot dog nitro pilots get far fewer flights out of their motors. I hate to quote a number, but it is pretty dismal (my information comes from a few of those pilots that I know who have been candid about the subject).
To be fair, we electric types have out own crosses to bare, like batteries. So no aspect of the heli hobby is without it's problems.
