e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Hyperion AC/DC charger's a123 charging capability ???

I was looking into buying the Hyperion EOS 0606i AC/DC Battery Charger, for (1) it's a123 charging capability as well as (2) AC/DC input flexibility.

My question is, how well does it charge the a123s? On my Schulze and xTrema chargers - the cut off voltage is around 3.6volts/cell. On the instructions of this Hyperion charger - it talks about 3.3v/cell.

I am a bit confused. Does the Hyperion only charge up to 3.3v/cell for the a123s?

look forward to your feedback ... khan

Hyperion is using nominal voltage on all the batt types in the manual.

i sort of understand nominal voltage.

i.e. after any batteries are fully charged and taken off the charger - over time, they tend to go down to their normal or nominal state - which is 3.3v for a123.

but when i read the instruction manual, i got the feeling that they only charge the cells up to nominal (not beyond). my schulze and xtrema chargers charges a123s up to 3.6v/cell

When vendors sell a 3S lipo pack they rate it as 11.1volts, but fully charged it's 12.60volts.

A 3S lipo pack at 11.1volts is 90% discharged.

charger answer

hi,
i have a hyp eoso6o6i ac/dc charger.
i charge 5s a123s with it,with a 12v car battery or at home.
it charges them to 3.7 v,this is normal.
but even though the charger is listed 6 amps,it is only 50 watts so on larger capacity packs like mine it charges at 3.3 amps,so it takes about 50 minutes to charge my packs.
this is clearly stated their product info.
this charger has been perfect, only regret is that it will not do my packs at 6 amps.
hope this helps

The 0606i AC/DC (with the mains power cord) is only able to charge at 50 Watts - which is small, meaning your A123 packs won't be charged too quickly. With more power they can be charged in 22 minutes.

A123 cell voltages-

Fully charged - 3.7V (May be 3.6V I need to check)
Nominal - 3.3V
Fully discharged - 2.6V (I need to check this)

Nominal voltage is the voltage the cells stay at for most of the flight when they are being used. It is also the best voltage to store the cells at for a long period of time. If you are drawing too many amps from a cell its voltage will drop below its nominal.

The funny thing about A123's is the voltage even goes up slightly when in use! Maybe due to the cells getting warmer.

How many cells are in the packs you want to charge?
What capacity are your packs? i.e. 1100, 2300, 4500mAh?
How quickly do you want to charge them?

charging

I have the 610 duo, which is two of the 610i's in one chassis. I can charge two Outrage 3000mah packs at the same time, and I can balance the packs to each other as well. Therefore, I believe you can charge one 6 cell pack and it will balance the pack while charging.

I also charge A123 2s packs that are used for receiver power. I hit them with 6-9 amps while at the field. I don't have balance taps on these, by the way.
