Well I just got home from IRCHA with my Rave kit. From what Brian says it is one of the first ten production models, so it might have a few minor issues. Since there isn't a Rave build thread yet I thought I would go ahead and start one. I'm working on pics right now, but there from a cell phone so don't expect high quality stuff. So for you guys out there with questions let me know, I'll try and answer them. Also, I'll post some updates (hopefully with pics) as things come together.

Well I'm having trouble right now moving pics to the computer right now So I'll include some pics later. I'm through steps 1 and 2 and just started on 3.

Step 1 Involved putting the main frames together and skids together.

Step 2 Installing main, and auto. gears to the main frames.

Step 3 Building the main rotor head.

Like I said before once I'm able to get pics I'll edit my posts and put them in their respective places.

Parker Hall

PS I've never done a build thread, so if anyone is interested in this let me know what else needs to be said and shown in my posts. Thanks!

Well I'm nearly finished with the head and I'm really impressed with the quality of everything. Everything that I have pulled apart has a good amount of blue thread lock on it. The first thing I have found wrong with the kit occured in step 3-4 (Seesaw Assy.). One of the seesaw arms was installed backwards. Other than that still everything looks good, much better quality than my prev. trex se. Directions are also very intuitive.

Just started on the tail assy. Everything went together very cleanly. Something new that I had never seen before on the tail design that was giving some troubles. The tail grips seem to have play in them. I wondered if this was normal so I called buzzin brian to clarify a few things. First of all I would really like to thank him! He answered my call at 1 am (I saw he was still online), and told me that the play was all part of their new tail design that involves stackng the two tail bearing on top of each other so they both absorb the thrust load. I'm sure Brian could explain all of the technical aspecs of tail and why they did what they did better than me though. So far I am really happy with everything this helicopter offers, from quality to service! I'm probibly going to stay up the rest of the night getting everything together so I can fly it tomorrow. Thanks again Brian.

Not an issue at all with the call, I was up so why not take the call. The design is to allow 2 bearings to take any thrust loading due to the limited space and size to add thrust bearings. This helps to prevent premature bearing wear and failure. It seems a little odd at first, but rest assured it will all stay where it is suppose to when assembled.

Just finished the main build of the helicopter. Total time took about 4 hrs. I think I'm just going to put all the electronics in it tomorrow morning. I was a little worried about the torque tube gears not meshing up prop. but everything lined up great and spun freely.

He actually told me he flew it at 5 am. Now THATS dedication! Hope you enjoyed the build. All of the reports are comming back pretty good. There are a few little things we are going to address, but so far so good guys. Give us a little time to get the little details worked out and we will have another run out as soon as we can!

Well, like Brian said I flew it at 5 am saturday morning. It was rock solid! It flew alot like a much bigger heli. I went outside today to fly it but am having trouble with my esc; so all I got were a few hover tests. I'm running the align 35x esc and when I go into idle up the motor just surges and I don't know what the problem is. It also cut out a couple of times while hovering so I don't know what the problem is. I'm not running gov. mode either. Here is my complete setup.

Motor: Scorpion -6 (Next D)
Esc: Align 35x
Reciever: 6100
Battery: EVO25s
Servos: hs-65mg's
Gyro: Hitec 5000 with there servo

I'm also going to bestbuy tomorrow to buy a new memory card reader for my computer so I can upload pics.

Here are the first round of pics I took. I'm hoping to get some video and aerial pics tonight. This is the fastest 450 I've ever flown! For now I've just got a -8 scorpion in there for the test flights so I can get a little longer flight time, and to keep the temps down for now. I'm going to put the next d motor in there either today or tomorrow.

Stretched 450 capable of swinging 350 blades stock.
comes stock with a new Torque Tube tail drive.

Yeah, I wonder when there will be a NextD forum up and running?

Btw, I'm getting +-13 collective pretty easy and a lot of cyclic with no binding at all. This head is amazing! My favorite thing to do is just see how fast I can get it going. It tracks like a 50 or bigger.

Parker, thanks for posting the thread and the pics. Interesting those links to the flybar cage. Are they plastic, and non-adjustable? They look vulnerable to breaking in a crash (I know, so don't crash) but that might just be my impression, time will tell.

I think the surging issue you had with the -6 motor was because its over-taxing the align esc. you need a 45A+ esc for that motor I believe. Personally I think the -8 is a better choice unless you just want crazy power for 3.5 minutes or less.

See ya!

Matt,

Those flybar cage links are plastic, but the ball links thread into them on the bottom. So there is a little adjustment if needed. As for how fragile they are I have no idea, nor do I want to find out right now. I have no way to get spare parts right now.
I haven't had a chance today to see if the -6 would work once I solved the surging issue, I'm guessing that the esc and battery will run too hot. I don't know what the align's temp cutoff is (or if they even have one), but I don't want it to cut off mid flight for sure.

helimatt,

You are correct the links are plastic, and are adjustable. And to be honest we surely hope they break in a crash. We needed a week link to break in a crash that was cheap to replace. The aluminum bits are not it! So the link serves 2 functions, it works flawlessly so far as we have seen, and it is break away in the event it needs to be. The replacement set is only $4, so in our oppinion it is a more than worthy sacrifice over bending expensive metal. Also be aware you get a spare set in the kit spare parts bag, so the first break is on us anyway!
