e-Electric General Discussion > What is a 4s setup?

Has anyone heard of or ran a 4s setup? How difficult is it to set up? Does it run better then a good 3s setup? What motor/esc/bec/pinion/battery would be best for a 4s setup? The person I just bought my Beam E4 from suggested it and I was just wondering how common it was, how well it worked and how to best set it up. Thanks all.

4s setup allows you to run 4 cell packs instead of the usual 3 cell packs. It boils down to choosing a motor and esc that can handle 4 cells=higher voltage which means more power available since power=vo|ts x amps. One advantage is longer flight times, I would estimate one to three minutes depending on flying style. The tradeoff is heavier packs. Most people that go with 4s setups on 450 sized helis go with the evo lite 4s packs or with the thunderpower prolite 4s packs either of which weighs around 180g. I've tried 4s with my trex (justgofly 500th, jazz 40) and can attest to the raw power you get out of it. It just blew me away. But 4s packs are more expensive and take longer to charge, so there is another tradeoff.

There is no royal road to flying helis but the sim sure helps!

Another advantage is cooler lipo temps because higher voltage means lower current for the same power. Lower current also means less voltage sag under load and less bogging.

4S packs are NOT necessarily heavier. 18C 2100s are great for this application and weigh the same or less than most 3S 25C 2200s.

My favorite packs are FMA Direct 4S 2100s, only $62 each! I have a pair of these with 220 cycles still going strong.

Also, they should not take any longer to charge then 3S packs if you have a good charger and sufficient power supply.

Scorpion 2221-10 and Jazz 40-6-18 is a great setup. The ONLY drawback I can think of for a 4S setup is the fact that you need an external BEC or an expensive ESC like the Jazz. 4S is the way to go!

That is great info. Why would you need an external bec? This is just what someone told my but an esc that has an operating range up to or past 14.8v will do just fine so with that advice wouldn't a 45a esc with a 6-15 volt operating range be ok, or not? If not, since I am still learning about electronics side of electric helis, can you explain why? Thanks. Also, what kind of bec should I look at concidering I have never had to deal with a bec before I dont know much. Thanks for all you help.

If I need a bec or an esc with a built in bec with a 4s setup and you say the 2221-10 is a great motor for it, what about the [url=http://www.readyheli.com/Scorpion_6_cell_45_Amp_ESC_with_Switching_BEC_p/sw45aesc.htm] from ready heli? would that be a good ESC for 4s setup with the -10 motor?

another question. If I did get an external bec, which would be better, 5v or 6v bec?

4s setup is awesome, I'm using a Neu1107/2y motor, Jazz 40-6-18 Esc and Dualsky 4s2200GT batteries on my Trex 450. 250 flights on each battery and still going strong 6+ min fligh times.

Next I'll try out Outrage 4s packs and I have a feeling that thei'll give a lot more power than the Dualskyes. There are videos in my youtube account www.youtube.com/vispaaja
