My cypher 3D launched a tail blade today! Luckily no one got hurt.I was just putting her into a hover when I heard a pop followed by violent oscillations. I hit hold just in time. No damage.
I could not find the blade, I would like to have seen what exactly failed on the blade.
I suspect the plastic is too soft and the self tapping screw used to hold the blade in it's grip point loaded the plastic too much resulting in its failure.
Has anyone else experienced this on their cyphers?
For now, I would suggest anyone with this heli to have a close look at their tail blades.
BTW, this has been probably my 12th flight consisting of basic aerobatics, loops, rolls and a few flips. No hard landings. Throttle curve is 100,75,100.

looks to me like the blade itself failed. Poor materials are likely to blame the threaded screw certainly didn't help any.

At least I know I'm not alone. I have removed all my gear from the Cypher and will never attempt fly it again. It is now a parts bitch. I bought it new, installed gear and spooled it up a couple of times to check tracking, gyro, and for vibrations. I had it light on the skids but had not even hovered yet. On my first hover attempt in normal, it was about 12 inches off the ground and decided to throw a radius arm off the swash. Ordered parts, repaired and took it out for another try. This time put it in idle up on the ground, I'm thinking at least if something goes wrong it won't fall out of the sky. Lifted off the ground about 3 feet and that's when it threw not only a tail blade but the grip in which it resided. I hit TH and it plopped to the ground. If you have a Cypher that performs well I wish you all the best. I don't feel safe spinning the damn thing up much less trying any kind of 3d maneuvers. This thing has an insane headspeed with cheap plastic components that I do not want to have removed from my person. Nothing like a tail blade in the eye to ruin your whole existence. For god's sake do not get near this thing when it is spinning.

For any Heli its all in the Setup and Looking over the chopper before every flight the makes the machine. I can make any heli that I own fly perfect. I really think there are weak points in any Heli that need to be always looked over and tweeked !! All my Helis have had issues when I first built them but you work them out and adjust and upgrade the weak areas or mod them !!! The EF Cypher is New -- The EF Cypher is Plastic but most of our Helis are plastic till you upgrade.I really like the Cypher and I own 10 Helis !! It is a lot like the Trex450 but controls and responds much better/more precise !!! The esc runs a little warm but I installed on the bottom of the chopper and took the blue coating off and I run 2200ma Outrage Batteries only ( 6 mins of Pure Fun !! ) Sorry you guys are having issues with this machine and I hope you can work It out. The Cypher is not a Beginner Heli !!!!!!!!!! Sterling

I realize the cypher is not a beginner heli, nor am I a beginner. I also have a Diablo, Beam, T-rex 500, Protos, and 2 Gaui ep 200's. I don't feel confident that this machine isn't going to come apart on me. I could understand a component failure during high stress flights, but mine failed twice and has never been out of a hover. Initially I was impressed with the build quality and value considering the relatively low cost. But now, I worry about someone getting seriously hurt and no hobby is worth that.

I'M sorry to here of your unlucky problems with the Cypher !! But with over 30 flights on mine I cannot be all but impressed with the heli !! All of our Helis are dangerous and I have even flew the GMP nitros of the past and seen it all happen . The Cypher is not for you -- Too Bad !!! Many Happy Hovers and Flights !!! ---Sterling

The tail pitch slider design is solid. So far no issues with that. In fact, the cyper tail has a little bit less slop than my friend's mini titan.
The only thing to look out for is that the tail fin does not bend when the the tail case is tightened. If so, the pitch arm can rub/bind againt the fin and case.
I'm planning to shim my fin out and use "real" fasteners instead of self tapping screws.

@ mrairbrush, I agree that setup and preflight checks are important but that will no save anyone's heli if the materials used in construction are inferior and can not withstand the dinamic loads encountered during flight. Please note that the blade itself failed. I wish I could find the blade to determine if there was a void within the molded plastic or if the sharp self tapping screw caused the failure.

Jetleaf, I'm sorry to hear you've had such bad luck with your cyper.

What is the probability that this heli has been molded in different plastics from one production run to another? This may explain why some have issues and others don't?

Okay Guys,

I have just received a replacement set of tail blades. Guess what, they came from a different mold. They look identical but the new ones have a letter "C" cast on them. The one that failed on mine is a "D". Now that does not prove anything but it makes me cureous to find out what letter is on your cypher tail blades???

The new blades have survived friday the 13th and a couple of flights since. Maybe they will make it past 12 flights LOL. I will keep you posted. I ditched the self tappers and installed m2 button heads with nylocks.
While I was at it, I shimmed the fin out with drilled out nuts and secured with m2 allen cap screws as well. The nylocks are a bit hard to fit, so I would tap the tail case if I had to do it again.

@rap! I just noticed a new problem! A split in the main blade at the root. It extends under the blade reinforcements to the bolt hole.
I'm starting to get frustrated here...this thing is advertised as a 3D heli yet it's not capable of withstanding basic flight loads!

What's a good blade alternative for the cypher in carbon and wood?

never heard of a cypher and I dont intend on ever trying it either... one of the main reasons why I went with a TRex was the fact that so many people already had experience with it. The more people you know that have experience with a particular heli, the better off you are when it comes to seeking advice or acquiring parts.

Well just ordered one out and should be in in a couple of days, lost the Blade to the customs people in China as I was passing through, copter, TX, batteries, charger, case the entire package, seems they are a bit nervous with the games going on, not sure if I'll ever see it again?
Anyway just a thought here, if you have never heard of a Cypher, never seen one and really do not care about anything other then a Trex, why bother even looking at this thread?

my cypher is so much tighter than my trex 450se. I have lots of flights on both and I hate to say it, only cause I spent more on the rex but I like the cypher ALOT more. Heres a pic my cypher is to the left of the trex so trexrookie has now both heard of and seen one
I too will take a look at my tail blades.

learning from Cypher crash #3

Just bought a new tail gearbox case from Ron's Heliproz South.
the screws that came with it are 4mm longer than original and they poke out the other side potentially conflicting with the tail pitch lever.
I visited Ron's to discover that all of his stock of this part had the same too long screws.
So I called the Global U.S. distributor @ 714-963-0329 and got a live person right away. I asked them to check this problem.
Then I bought some socket-head screws from Ron.

CYPHER MOTOR issue!
After three crashes I noticed that the motor looked different.
(Okay, this is my first electric heli).
The E-clip under the pinion gear was gone and the brass bushing it held in place was broken. Since the Cypher comes assembled, I didn't even know what to be looking for in this area.
(I'm not blaming my crashes on the motor.)

Add this E-clip to your inspection list!!!

I threw a main blade when switching from Idleup 1 to Idleup 2 on it shakedown flight. The blade bolt and brass tube pulled thru the balde root and plastic reinforcement. It happened about 2 feet in the air and blade flew about 30 ft. It bent the flybar, tail boom, main shaft, main blades and 2 sets of Futaba servo gear sets. About $25 for parts plus a set of Align 325 mm main blades and I'm back in the saddle. Flew it and man it is fun. I have a N9, Trex 600e, and other helis and have owned many others, but I have to say this little heli is so much fun.

Hey guys, I have been flying my Cypher with 4 Futaba 3154. I plan on replacing the 3 cyclic servos because 2 of them have had the electronics fail. At $34 each, I'm tired of replacing them. My questions are:

What are you guys using?
How much each?
Bought from where?

I want something in the under $19 range. I don't care if I need to Dremel a little.
Thanks
