Everyone out there in modeling land.
News flash: Steve Kaluf has been fired by the AMA Executive VP Jim Cherry during the IRCHA Jamboree because he climbed on a mower owned by the AMA while he was on vacation to help prepare the field for the event. For many of you who personally know Steve, and those who don't, he has been very instrumental in all techinical aspects of the AMA. Please let your district VP's know how upset you are with this shocking development. Also, please email Jim Cherry (jcherry@modelaircraft.org) and let him know. The executive council met on Monday (a normal scheduled meeting) and this was brought up as all of the district VP's wanted Steve back immediately. Somehow, there is a clause in Mr. Cherry's contract that he can hire and fire anyone he wishes without the executive councils blessing or knowledge and there is nothing the EC can do to overturn it. This is just wrong, and now you can ask "What is the AMA doing for me?". Looks like creating their own little country club and only Mr. Cherry's friends are invited.
Sorry for bringing this up here but something has to be done about this and the more ways we get this out to the modeling world, the better.

Kevin,

Has the AMA commented on this? This is ridiculous. What is the AMA version of the story? I said hello to Steve in passing, but I had no idea this was going on.

You are kidding, right???

Mr. Kaluf has been one of the few AMA guys that I really respect and also one of the few that really knows his stuff (besides how to glue balsa).....

I will email Mr. Cherry to see if this is at all true, and if it is I urge the membership to let him know about it as well.

Steve Kaluf

No response from the AMA as far as I know. The EC (Executive Council) had their meeting on Sunday/Monday and the issue was brought up by Dave Brown, AMA President. The entire board is very upset and they brought the lawyers in (never thoght I'd say anything good about lawyers) and after reviewing Mr. Cherry's contract, that's when they found out that the only way to get Steve back was to buy out Mr. Cherry's contract and rehire Steve. Evidently, this is even more difficult to do.

This sounds to me alot like two people butting heads and the one with power waiting for a reason.

Steve is a great guy and a friend to all of us helicopter pilots and will be sorely missed if this stands.

If that is the story than it's just your average run of the mill corperate BS and the AMA can suck it. I'll use that plank rag for packing material. I think someone needs to start IMHA,International Model Helicopter Association.

I thought over some of the reasons that I have had to fire someone.
Sometimes the straw that breaks the camels back is pretty petty, but at the same time it is part of a far bigger problem.

AMA Executive Director Jim Cherry

Looks like it may be starting. My email to Mr. Cherry was kicked back to me with the message

"<jcherry@modelaircraft.org>:
206.246.138.102 failed after I sent the message.
Remote host said: 550 5.7.1 Requested action not taken: message refused"
Interesting! Maybe the the *&^# has already hit the fan at AMA. The Executive Director refusing members email?

Seeing a 550 5.7.1 for a closed or suspended or turned-off email address is so off-the-wall that I have to doubt this is the case.

It's more like your mail was seen as spam (usually by source IP) and rejected on that premise.

email

Well, that may be the case, but a couple of other email addresses were kicked back too (I cc'd all of the district VP's). I believe that he has already gotten so many emails (this action actually happened last Tuesday and got out into the mainstream on Friday), that he has installed a rule for his email kicking out such things as if Steve's name is in the address, subject or in the message so he doesn't have to deal with it. I sent another email without using anything on the subject either in the subject line or message itself to see if that gets kicked out. I also just emailed Dave Brown as he is a good friend and fellow rotorhead about this email kickback. Dave and the entire EC is on Steve's side in this matter.

What was the reason for dismissal?

Before we get a lynch squad, maybe we should hear the other side.

I have known Steve Kaluf for a few years now.
From my perspective of being on the outside looking in, Steve is always one of the first people to jump in and help whenever there is a need. Steve has spent countless hours working in the AMA communications booth for events such as the XFC and IRCHA.
He has been nothing but kind and supportive to the AMA members.
This is exactly the kind of person we need more of.

Yes I only know one side of the story but if the AMA Executive council wants Steve to be re-instated, well thats good enough for me.
Again, from the outside looking in, and as one of the 170,000 paying AMA members, Mr. Cherry, I ask that egos be dropped, pride sucked up and correct this wrong move.
We need more people like Steve Kaluf.

You 3D guys may not know the half of all that Steve has done. As a contest guy, I've seen how selfless he has been running the Natls. for so many yrs, mostly not even flying, but just serving others. He's a military man, so I can see him just jumping in and getting things done. Dang, I sure hope the AMA isn't this screwed up.
