Got my XRB today! First thing I did was tear into the package. I was like a little kid in a candy store. First mistake I made was just tearing into the box. When I did I found out how fragile this machine is. I broke the tail rotor off, WHOOPS!

OK, that all done I plugged everything in and cranked it up. Man this thing is squirrelly! Ok, read the instructions.. Ahh check blade tracking. I found the blades off by 4mm. On a machine this size, that does allot!

Adjusting the tracking took 2 turns on the link at the top. The bottom only took 1 turn on the bottom link.

Before I got to this point I tried flying the machine several times. During that time I did smack it around and went through 2 sets of blades. These little foam blades are great at absorbing crash damage. Thank goodness.

After I got the tracking straight the machine is smooth and stable. I did require ALLOT of forward trim to keep it in a tight hover but heck who cares it works.

One huge plus to this is that one looses all their inhibitions when flying a machine like this allows you to do and fly in ways you can't imagine.

If you get one of these I think you will have lots of fun. Time to discover new ways of flying in an upright way.

Volkul,

Tracking is one thing, don't forget to adjust the pitch of the upper blades, page 7 of the manual. This is important for the tail to lock. Once done properly, the tail behaves like you have a GY401

If you run out of elevator trim on the panel, go to page 22 andd adjust those little potentiometers to get your trims back onto center.

We have also found that the main gear for the lower set of blades may drift up the mast after a few crashes. You will loose all tail control and the lower blades spins a lot slower. Just push the gear back down the mast to cover the whole length of the teeth and you are fine.

Have fun & Happy New Year

Does anyone have an idea for a swivel type connector for the wire to the heli. This type of connector is used on phone cords. It would be nice to find something that would carry the current.

After you get it trimmed and flying well, remove the flybar weights. It really comes alive!

Trim pots

In the controler base there are 4 little rubber plugs in the face plate. The 3 on the left are the only ones that have adjustment pots under them.

These pots can be used to adjust the machine on it's 3 main axis.

I found myself maxing out one of my trims and needed more adjustablity. So I experimented. When I did I found these pots to be the answer to my problem.

The pot on the far left controls the rudder.
The pot second from the left controls roll
The pot third from the left controls elevator.

Use caution when adjusting these as it only takes a very small adjustment to make a dramatic change in the control of the direction you are working on.

So if you find yourself with a "to much trim"problem this will help cure it.

Repair tip

I had broke off the tail rotor on my Llama. Looking for a way to resecure it; I found that if I drill a 1.5mm hole into the rotor hub I could then use a 2mm servo ball screw to reattach it to the tail boom.

Looks like a beanie copter!

Regarding the price list: "AC adapter $98." A hundred bucks for a transformer ?

XRB Setup

I had the same blade tracking problem AND my tail rotor was broken in the package. Once I got the blades tracking, the trim pots did need adjusting. I found the higher the rotor speed the better the tail control. Take the rotors up and then bring it down, it seems to be more stable.

Cyclic is sluggish, the next step is to adjust the ball on the flybar to the "Advanced" position.

I did break the lower blade, but never looked in the box for additional blades. Overall its pretty cool.

XRB Setup

After going through 2 sets of blades, I have this little machine almost done. I get some drift and I will adjust the pitch on 1 blade, that should resolve it.

I am having a blast with it. My living room is sort of small and doing a circut and nose in can be tight.

I does appear that the pots are somewhat integrated with each other due to the blade pitch changing. So if you adjust the elevator, you will need to make a slight adjust to the aileron.

Following the troubleshooting diagram in order is necessary. Set the gyro, set the blade tracking, then the trims, adjust the pots, trim and then blade pitch if necessary.

If you do it out of order, you will be chasing trims all the time. If you have a landing where you hit the foam blades, although you may not damage it, the blades will be out of trim again as the foam will slightly change shape.

I do like this little machine and I think it will be a hit a my next club meeting.

Replacement blades are stiffer.

The white reinforcing tape is now wrapped around the leading edge of the new replacement blades. The original kit blades had the tape placed only on the top.

tail control doesn't work suddenly

No matter how I trim the rudder even using subtrim, the red light is still there and consequently the tail doesn't work!!! It happened suddenly one day after the XRB has been with me for a month without high impact crush so far.

I try to hold tightly the heli and apply the throttle, the light switches from red to green to red randomly.

Does anyone have the same problem?

Kevin

Beginner

I'm a beginner to RC heli and know nuts about it. Would the XRB be a good tool to start with?

Beginner...

IMO, just a very expensive beanie copter. Fragile, expensive, electric, did I mention fragile?
Not to start a flame war or a dozen posts by folks with a lot of time on their hands, try a G2 simulator, full version, and buy something used from an enthusiast here on the RR forum.

Settings

I switched the fly bar to the advanced setting. Now it came alive. Trims are much more sensative. Reacts more like a real rc model.

Not quite as stable, but definetly more fun. I set it back to the standard mode only because my living room is too small and I don't want to bang it around.

I haven't flown my Freya in a few weeks, we'll see how the real one feels after flying this one.

For an accomplished pilot who has the need to fly, this is better than the simulator.

Bottom Line??

Whats the bottom line, is it worth the $250-300?? Or stick with Real Flight G2?

Seems damn expensive for what it is, about the cost of another 30 size heli..

Bottom Line

G2 full version, and a used 30 size. There are a few of us who are addicted to the RC hobby (it beats drinkin') but do not have "disposable income". Some have the fortune to indulge a lot of their desires. If you're the former, you know what to do. If you're the latter, buy it.

G2 or Lama

If you are in the beginning stages, then get the G2. This is not a replacement for a simulator. I haven't used my G2 in almost a year.

Flying this in my living is like flying a real rc heli in a limited space. Keeps the fingers active. Nothing better than flying this on a rainy day, cause you know you're the only one still flying!
